The commerce of bees—buying, selling, breeding, transporting and placing colonies—blends ancient craft with modern science, strict biosecurity laws, and clients who demand precision. What the Bee Trade Actually Sells
Bees are not simply caught and sold. The market offers distinct products, each with its own pricing and handling requirements.
Package bees remain the basic entry point: screened boxes containing roughly 1.5 to 3 pounds of worker bees—approximately 10,000 to 20,000 individuals—plus a caged mated queen. Producers in temperate climates begin shipping in late winter when northern demand peaks.
Nucleus colonies, or “nucs,” represent a significant upgrade. These small, fully functioning colonies typically contain five frames with brood at all stages, honey stores, pollen, and an already-laying queen. Because nucs are established and cohesive, they command higher prices and attract serious beekeepers and garden estates.
Full colonies change hands between beekeeping operations, orchards, and conservation projects. A well-documented colony with proven genetics can fetch surprising prices.
Mated queens form a rarefied sub-market. A queen from a top breeder—selected for gentleness, productivity, low swarming tendency, or disease resistance—may sell for multiples of standard commercial queens.
Breeding Lines That Shape the Trade

The Italian bee (Apis mellifera ligustica) dominates globally as the reliable commercial workhorse, bred for docility and prolific brood production. The Carniolan bee (Apis mellifera carnica), from central Europe’s Alpine regions, offers explosive spring buildup and legendary gentleness, making it ideal for urban and estate settings.
The Buckfast bee is perhaps the trade’s most storied product. Brother Adam developed this hybrid at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, selecting for disease resistance, economical honey consumption, and swarm resistance. Because the Buckfast name carries genuine weight, imposters appear frequently—serious buyers deal only with registered breeders whose lines trace directly to the abbey.
Native dark bees (Apis mellifera mellifera) are experiencing a revival. Conservation-minded estates and rewilding projects increasingly specify them for local adaptation and genetic heritage preservation.
How Queens Are Made
The queen-rearing process explains why elite genetics command elite prices. Breeders identify exceptional colonies and graft larvae less than 24 hours old into artificial queen cups placed in queenless colonies that flood them with royal jelly.
Here lies the element that humbles every breeder: queen mating is beyond human control. A queen may mate with 10 to 20 drones from whatever happens to be flying nearby. The most serious breeders use instrumental insemination—a microsurgical procedure requiring specialist training—or establish isolated mating stations on offshore islands like Colonsay in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides.
Biosecurity and Regulation
No aspect of the trade has transformed more dramatically than biosecurity. The spread of Varroa destructor mites since the 1980s imposed regulatory frameworks that operators ignore at their peril.
Notifiable diseases like European and American Foulbrood trigger mandatory reporting and can force destruction of entire apiaries. Import controls govern bee movement between countries. The Small Hive Beetle, not yet established in Britain, remains the disease nightmare every inspector watches for.
The Exclusive Garden Market
Clients commissioning bees for Michelin-starred kitchen gardens or restored country house estates purchase outcomes, not generic inputs. Genetic specification comes first: native dark bees for ecological authenticity, docile strains for public settings, locally foraged colonies for rewilding projects.
Hive aesthetics matter enormously. The classic WBC hive—tiered and white-painted—is preferred in formal gardens despite being operationally inferior to modern designs. Bespoke commissions in painted wood or copper-roofed timber appear at the highest market end.
Ongoing management is increasingly built into contracts. Estate clients want bees present, healthy, and tended by experts. Successful operators offer retainers covering inspections, swarm prevention, winter preparation, and colony replacement.
