Roses, marigolds and tulips begin deteriorating the instant they leave the plant, requiring cooling, grading, packaging, air transport, auction and sale\u2014typically within 48 hours\u2014before they wilt into economic loss. The global flower trade represents one of the most weather-dependent and time-sensitive industries on the planet, built entirely on the presumption that certain regions will continue to deliver the precise sunlight, rainfall and nighttime temperatures that delicate petals demand.<\/p>\n<p>That presumption is cracking. From the shores of Kenya&#8217;s Lake Naivasha to the wholesale stalls beneath Kolkata&#8217;s Howrah Bridge, the same story recurs with different flowers and different accents: rainfall has become erratic, heat no longer respects seasonal boundaries, and the families who have grown flowers for generations are being forced to reconsider everything they thought they knew.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lakenaivashasslowsiege\">Lake Naivasha\u2019s Slow Siege<\/h2>\n<p>Along Kenya&#8217;s Great Rift Valley, the shore of Lake Naivasha once seemed almost purpose-built for rose cultivation. The altitude moderates equatorial heat; the freshwater lake provides irrigation; daylight hours remain nearly constant year-round. This narrow strip of land now supplies approximately 40 percent of roses sold in the European Union, generating more than 81 billion Kenyan shillings in export earnings in 2025 alone and supporting over 150,000 jobs, the majority held by women.<\/p>\n<p>But the lake that enabled this industry has turned against it. Since 2011, Naivasha has risen in unpredictable surges\u2014a phenomenon scientists attribute to shifting rainfall and warming temperatures across the Rift Valley. This is not a single flood but a gradual encroachment: greenhouse by greenhouse, the water advances and does not recede. Researchers tracking the shoreline estimate the lake has consumed as much as three-quarters of some flower farms&#8217; land.<\/p>\n<p>Dickson Ngome leased a small plot near the lake in 2008, when the shore sat more than two kilometers away and farmers feared the lake might disappear entirely. Instead, the water crept closer each year. In late 2025, after a rainy season that arrived early and refused to end, Ngome and his family woke to find their home and farm submerged under nearly a foot of water. Thousands of others along the shoreline have suffered the same fate. Farm managers elsewhere watched week by week as four greenhouses of blooms vanished beneath the highest water levels some operations had ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The irony is stark: an industry once threatened by drought fears now finds itself drowning in rain no one predicted. Growers are relocating greenhouses to higher ground, investing in flood barriers and lobbying for improved water-level forecasting. As one Kenyan researcher observed, the lake does not wait for anyone&#8217;s five-year plan.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"andeanmicroclimateshifts\">Andean Microclimate Shifts<\/h2>\n<p>Fly northwest across the Atlantic, over the flower districts outside Bogot\u00e1 and into the volcanic highlands around Quito, and you reach the source of most roses sold in North America. At altitudes above 2,500 meters, warm days and cool nights historically produced roses of such structural perfection\u2014thick stems, enormous blooms, exceptional vase life\u2014that Ecuadorian and Colombian growers built a $1.4 billion-plus export industry almost entirely on microclimate advantages.<\/p>\n<p>That microclimate is no longer dependable. In 2024, an intense El Ni\u00f1o weather pattern inverted the Andes&#8217; usual rainfall: torrential rain pummeled Colombia and Ecuador&#8217;s Pacific coast while the high savannas on the opposite side dried out, part of a drought severe enough that Ecuador was forced to ration electricity and Colombia&#8217;s capital faced water restrictions. Growers who had spent a century optimizing for one weather regime suddenly had to manage both drought stress and erratic downpours within the same growing cycle\u2014sometimes within the same month.<\/p>\n<p>Industry analysts describe growers who over-pruned rose bushes into near-dormancy during one crisis, only to scramble to restore full production for the next demand surge\u2014a process that cannot be rushed because rose bushes recover on their own physiological timeline, not the market&#8217;s. The loading docks in Quito and Bogot\u00e1, which now handle tens of thousands of tons of flowers in the two weeks before Mother&#8217;s Day alone, increasingly gamble on logistics windows that a single unexpected storm can close.<\/p>\n<p>Growers have not abandoned the region; if anything, they have expanded, planting new hectares of roses in Ecuador even as informal growers rush to meet demand. But expansion built on shifting ground carries different risks than expansion built on stability, and everyone in the trade\u2014from pruning crews to air-cargo companies moving record tonnages each spring\u2014quietly understands that the climatic foundation beneath the industry is no longer as fixed as the mountains that hold it up.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"indiasritualeconomyontheline\">India\u2019s Ritual Economy on the Line<\/h2>\n<p>Long before refrigerated trucks and auction floors existed, there were flower markets that opened before dawn, spread along riverbanks or under bridges, and ran on reputation and haggling alone. Kolkata&#8217;s Mallick Ghat market, sprawled beneath the Howrah Bridge for more than 130 years, ranks among the largest such markets anywhere. Its narrow lanes overflow with roses, lotus, tuberose and, above all, marigolds\u2014the flowers that saturate Hindu ritual life, from temple offerings to wedding garlands to funeral wreaths. More than 2,000 vendors work here daily, arriving by truck from growing villages an hour or two outside the city.<\/p>\n<p>Markets like this are acutely sensitive to weather because they depend on same-day freshness and minimal cold storage. A late monsoon, a sudden heat spike or an unseasonal downpour does not merely bruise a shipment\u2014it can erase a day&#8217;s income for thousands of small vendors at once.<\/p>\n<p>Six hundred miles south, at Bengaluru&#8217;s iconic KR Market, that vulnerability became vivid in early 2024, when a brutal heatwave collided with the city&#8217;s ongoing water crisis just as two major festivals\u2014Ugadi and Eid\u2014fell days apart. Jasmine, the flower most in demand for the occasion, jumped from approximately 300 rupees per kilogram to 600 almost overnight. Roses doubled in price. Longtime vendors who had worked the market for three decades stated plainly that heat and water shortage had throttled the harvest just as demand spiked, leaving insufficient blooms to meet needs. The following year, with better rains, the opposite occurred: jasmine prices for the same festival season fell by half within a single day, as growers finally had enough water and cool nights to bring a full crop to market at once.<\/p>\n<p>Multiply that whiplash across India&#8217;s dozens of regional flower markets, most serving religious and cultural occasions on fixed calendar dates that cannot be postponed for weather, and an entire ritual economy improvises in real time every time the monsoon arrives early, late or not at all.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"thedutchgreenhouseparadox\">The Dutch Greenhouse Paradox<\/h2>\n<p>If the flower markets of Kenya, the Andes and India are exposed to open skies, the Netherlands built an industry that seemed to escape them. Around Aalsmeer, just south of Amsterdam, the Royal FloraHolland flower auction moves more than 40 million stems daily through a warehouse roughly the size of 200 football fields\u2014flowers arriving from more than 60 countries, sorted, priced by descending-price &#8220;Dutch auction&#8221; clock, and shipped onward within hours. Much of what fuels this system grows not under open sky but inside vast climate-controlled greenhouses that use artificial lighting and heating to manufacture a perfect, endless spring regardless of external conditions.<\/p>\n<p>That engineered independence revealed its own weather-shaped vulnerability. When Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine sent European natural gas prices soaring to 20 times normal levels in 2022, Dutch greenhouse growers\u2014who depend on gas-fired heating to keep tulips, roses and orchids growing through cold, dark winters\u2014found themselves unable to afford the climate control that had made their business viable. Grower Ruud van der Lans made the unprecedented decision to switch off lights in 80 percent of his greenhouses that winter simply to survive the bill. Industry groups estimated that up to 40 percent of the country&#8217;s roughly 3,000 greenhouse businesses faced financial distress, and the number of growers abandoning the trade more than doubled that year, cutting roughly 100 million euros from the country&#8217;s annual flower production almost overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Even an industry built to defeat weather with steel and glass remains, at bottom, an energy-intensive way of substituting for a stable climate. When the underlying systems that make artificial climates affordable become unstable themselves, the greenhouse offers no real shelter. In response, some Dutch growers have invested tens of millions of euros in geothermal heating and biomass plants, treating energy diversification as its own form of climate adaptation, alongside efforts to recycle up to 90 percent of water used across the sector.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"abusinessbuiltonborrowedweather\">A Business Built on Borrowed Weather<\/h2>\n<p>What connects a flooded rose farm in the Rift Valley, a drought-stressed hillside outside Quito, a heatwave in a Bengaluru market and a gas crisis in a Dutch greenhouse is the same underlying reality: the modern flower trade identified the handful of places on Earth where weather happened to be nearly perfect for growing delicate, fast-perishing crops, then bet an entire global logistics network on that weather staying put. Valentine&#8217;s Day and Mother&#8217;s Day\u2014the two biggest days on the floral calendar\u2014now depend on cargo planes lifting off on schedule from Bogot\u00e1, Quito and Nairobi, which in turn depend on harvests timed to the day, which in turn depend on rainfall and temperature patterns that once seemed reliable enough to build a business around.<\/p>\n<p>They no longer are, uniformly. Growers everywhere are adapting as best they can\u2014moving greenhouses to higher ground in Kenya, diversifying rose varieties bred for heat and drought tolerance in the Andes, building better water storage in Indian growing villages, and chasing energy independence in Dutch greenhouses. None of it represents a permanent fix. All of it acknowledges that the old assumption\u2014that the sky would simply keep cooperating\u2014no longer holds.<\/p>\n<p>For the vendor at Mallick Ghat sorting marigolds at dawn, or the farmer paddling a boat past his flooded greenhouse on Lake Naivasha, the flower trade was never really about flowers. It was about borrowing a very specific, very fragile kind of weather and turning it into a livelihood.
